Episode 2
EDM, But Grungier
Two different genres with two different audiences, yet one uniting feature. In this episode, the hosts are divided by bias. We look at the distinct EDM and grunge genres, and while some of our hosts are familiar with both, 2 of 4 aren’t as comfortable. This episode becomes a learning moment for our hosts as passion leads to discovery through these genres. We begin at the intersection of grunge music, somewhere deep in the rainy city of Seattle, Washington. The big four: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden, are circulated through as we introduce both our listeners and co-hosts to their music. Chances are, you’ve probably heard them at one point in your life. Lighthearted, humorous discussion reveals how easy it is to accidentally stumble across music, and with the grunge genre, which teeters somewhere between mainstream rock and underground thrash, there is a lot to be discovered. Transitioning to EDM we find a little place for everybody in the music. Exploring artists like Skrillex and Daft Punk, DeadMau5 and Avicii, we set our sights beyond the festival-dance stereotypes of the genre, and aim a little higher. This episode leans away from critical analysis and more towards recognition; of understanding where these genres fit in to our lives. It is said that opposites attract, and as discovered through this episode, the fans of the grunge and EDM genres fit together like pieces in a musically-dense puzzle. Our second episode is a reflective, un-scripted exploration into two well-loved genres, connecting the dots and establishing awareness along the way.
